Hans Hofmann & Maud Morgan
While numerous American art students blossomed under the tutelage of Hans Hofmann since his arrival in New York in 1932, including artists who went on to garner critical acclaim like Louise Nevelson and Lee Krasner, the one whose work bears a particular visual resonance with that of Hofmann is Maud Morgan. Morgan’s unsuccessful attempts to study with Hofmann in Munich were rewarded a few years later in New York. “He was introducing us to the European theories of Picasso and Matisse with whom he had been friends while in Paris. . . . Hofmann’s teaching was extremely dynamic. . . . Hofmann was a superb teacher and excellent draughtsman. Everything I know about space I learned from him,” Morgan wrote in her autobiography.
