Robert & Shana ParkeHarrison
Creative confidants since graduate school, the husband-and-wife team of Robert and Shana ParkeHarrison started out with individual practices, which gradually began to fuse into one. With no set roles or processes, they rely on research and conversation to formulate ideas in tandem, while the duties required for their execution shift with each project. Official collaborators since the late 1990s, the ParkeHarrisons have developed a fluid photographic practice that incorporates elements of sculpture, performance, collage, and painting as means of creating the scenes they capture. These tableaux feature an “Everyman,” played by Robert, who attempts to save the earth from the catastrophic effects of human activity. Examining real issues through a surreal visual vocabulary, with works like Dark Rain the ParkeHarrisons contribute a rather utopian voice to the environmental debate.
